National Runaway Safeline

Approximately 4.2 million youth ages 13 to 25 experience homelessness each year in the United States.

For 50 years, the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) has been providing crisis intervention services to young people and their families while also offering prevention, educational and training programs to the network of runaway and homeless youth (RHY) service providers nationwide. This work directly supports our mission of keeping runaway, homeless and at-risk youth safe and off the streets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help?

Volunteer, donate, or spread the word about NRS. To help organizations in your community, reach out directly to find out what they need. Youth shelters may require specific supplies, for example.

What if I'm not able to commit to the required number of volunteer hours/crisis services shifts?

We often find volunteers suspect they might have trouble making time for their shifts, but they quickly realize they want to do this – and they fulfill the commitment. Reach out directly to learn about different ways to volunteer that fit your schedule.

What if I'm not sure I can handle the emotional and mental weight of volunteering in the crisis services center?

Our volunteer community is very supportive of one another and if anyone has any difficulty with what they hear/read while volunteering, someone is always there to help them. Our crisis services training addresses caring for yourself during the volunteer process, and our Crisis Services Team is there to provide direct feedback and support.
