Why I Support The National Runaway Safeline – Joyce Sapir

We share the next edition of a series of articles written by members of our board of directors. This month’s contributor is Joyce Sapir, who acts as co-chair for our annual benefit, Spirit of Youth, and who is a volunteer liner.

My name is Joyce Sapir and I am a liner and board member at NRS. I started out taking calls twice a week after my 40 hours of invaluable training. I quickly became passionate about the mission, keeping our most vulnerable asset in this country, our youth, safe and off the streets. This turned into becoming the co-chair of our annual fundraiser and then on to joining the board.

What I love best, on the phone, is when I hear the exhale of breath on the other end of the line because the youth or their parent/guardian is finally able to relax from the crisis and tell their story without judgement, without being told what to do or not do, and finally for someone to just be there for them and give them the support they need to come up with a solution or even just the next step. That is what we do, day in and day out, 24/7/365.

It is my pleasure to be a member of the board and be able to use my skills to help further our mission outside of the call center. It is a family affair for me, not only am I a liner, a board member, and a sponsor of our annual Spirit of Youth event, I am very proud to say my two daughters, Jorie and Jenna, are on the associate board, helping to get our message out and making a difference.
