The National Runaway Safeline is rewarding place to work, serving young people across the nation.
Interns work and learn as part of the Crisis Services team that provides solution-focused crisis intervention, information, and referrals to young people that are facing crisis, have run away, or are experiencing homelessness via a crisis hotline and digital communication platforms (chat, text, email, and online forum postings).
These positions are available as academic year opportunities and are part-time.Interns are required to completed 40+ hours of intensive training before handing crisis contacts.

MSW Internship
The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is seeking qualified candidates for a crisis center MSW internship position. NRS is the go to resource for runaway and homeless youth and their families.
The MSW intern will be responsible for handling crisis communications through our national 1800 Runaway hotline, and across digital platforms such as: live chat, live text email, and forum. They will also work on projects related to the individual’s skills and the agency’s needs. These tasks will allow interns to receive direct experience in assisting and empowering youth and their families in crisis.
Past projects have included updating and creating referral resources for our crisis center, co-facilitating training sessions, and helping with Youth Hope Month.
While interns will have the opportunity to develop valuable clinical skills throughout their experience, this is not a clinically focused internship. The primary emphasis is on learning the organization’s services, policies, procedures, and crisis intervention model. During the first several weeks interns will participate in trainings and shadowing various staff members
Students applying for the MSW internship program should be:
- Interested in adolescent issues and have a background in psychology, sociology, social work or a human services related field
- Be pursuing an MSW from a credited university
- Be comfortable using multiple platforms to communicate such as phone, chat, text, email and forums.
- Be okay with listening to difficult conversations that may involve abuse, suicidality and family dynamics.
