National Runaway Safeline

Shine a Light for National Runaway Prevention MonthToday is the last day of National Runaway Prevention Month. Throughout the month, organizations and individuals across the nation came together to be a source of light, hope and support for runaway, homeless and at-risk youth. A huge thank you to all who hosted and participated in the many national events throughout the month. Your support built critical awareness on an issue that too often feels invisible.

Below are some highlights from events held by NRPM partners but you can certainly find more by going on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and searching the hashtag #NRPM2018.

#NRPM2018 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE NATIONAL EVENTS

  1. 2018 National Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) Grantees Training

We kicked off National Runaway Prevention Month at this year’s RHY Grantees Training hosted by the Runaway and Homeless Youth Training and Technical Assistance Center. This was a perfect way to kick off NRPM alongside our partners and fellow RHY providers across the nation all in one place – Austin, Texas.

  2. Wear Green Day

  3. Light the Night

Cities across the nation held “Light the Night” events to highlight runaway and homeless youth issues. Some of these events included:
Runaway Candlelight Forum and Vigil by Family Services YMCA & SBCC Guardian Scholars
    –
Skate Park After Dark – Albany, OR AND Corvallis, OR. by Jackson Street Youth Services.
    Lighting up the Brighton Center:

  4. Teachable Tuesday

For Teachable Tuesday, NRS provide current runaway and homeless youth statistics available for individuals and organizations to share on social media to raise awareness about RHY issues. We highlighted information from Chapin Hall’s Missed Opportunities report, True Colors Fund’s State Index report and more toolkits and materials.

  5. Shine a Light Twitter Chat

While NRPM is nearing a close, we encourage everyone to continue these critical conversations to “shine a light” on these issues all year round! If you’re not already a NRPM partner, please reach out to Rachel Reynolds, Outreach & Prevention Specialist, at rreynolds@1800RUNAWAY.org to learn more.

December 2023 Volunteer of the Month

It’s not often that a nonprofit organization is lucky enough to have long-term volunteers. Fortunately, the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) has been working with John P., our December 2023 Volunteer of the Month, for more than 12 years! John finds that volunteering provides a “meaningful connection with the human experience.” He recognizes something special in helping those in need and wonders why more people aren’t drawn to the fulfilling world of volunteering.

November 2023 Volunteer of the Month

Sam began on her journey with the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) at 16, much younger than the average age of volunteers. She learned about NRS’s volunteer program through her high school\’s list of after-school activities. This led her to sign-up for what she called an eye-opening 40-hour training that was so impactful that she still uses the training material to help guide her through difficult chats. Now, as a college student at Washington University in St. Louis, Sam continues to volunteer by talking to young people and concerned adults who reach out through NRS’s chat service.

Partner Spotlight – Advocates for Children

As Advocates for Children in northwest Georgia celebrates the organization’s 40th anniversary, the team takes pride in their countless accomplishments, including client success stories, new and expanded programs and the purchase and renovation of their new headquarters where all prevention, education and advocacy programs are now under one roof.
